FREC 4 (First Response Emergency Care)

This qualification is ideal for those looking to progress their career in the emergency services, private ambulance services, or specialist roles within the military, police, and fire services. It suits those aiming to become emergency care assistants, intermediate ambulance practitioners, event medical providers, associate practitioners, or healthcare assistants.

Delivered over five days, the course builds on the QA Level 3 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) and expands learners’ knowledge and practical skills. Topics include thoracic trauma, sepsis, respiratory disorders, maternity care, triage, mental health crises, and emergency care for children. The course also covers advanced airway management, medical gas administration, and assisting clinicians with interventions — providing a wider scope of practice and opening up greater employment opportunities.

Assessment is thorough, with practical assessments, skills tests, learner workbooks, and exams. The qualification meets descriptor level E of the PHEM skills framework and forms part of a pathway leading to the QA Level 6 Diploma in Paramedic Practice (RQF). Requalification is maintained through annual CPD and completion of an Intermediate Life Support course — the full qualification does not need to be retaken annually.
